Prenatal Massage Therapy

Prenatal Massage Therapy Level One (Foundation Techniques)

This two-day course is designed to teach massage therapists how to safely modify massage routines and techniques to meet the needs of pregnant women. You will learn basic prenatal, physiological and structural changes that pregnant women typically experience. We will be creating a foundation to practice techniques that will be safe and effective for low-risk, uncomplicated pregnancies.

Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to:

 

  1. Identify regular structural, functional, emotional, and physiological prenatal changes relevant to massage therapy practices.

  2. Identify modifications, precautions, and contra-indicated practices to perform massage therapy during low-risk, uncomplicated pregnancies safely. 

  3. Recognise the symptoms of prenatal complications and high-risk factors to know when to refer and withhold massage therapy.

  4. Position and drape pregnant clients for safe, effective massage therapy.

  5. Techniques for supine, sidelying, and semi-reclining positions and to most effectively respond to the needs of pregnant clients.

  6. Massage techniques for common prenatal ailments "sciatica." piriformis syndrome, lower back/SIJ  discomfort, carpal and tarsal tunnel syndrome, ribcage opening and more 

 

Required Textbook and Reading for Students

Pre-and Perinatal Massage Therapy, second edition by Carole Osborne. Focus study on chapters 1 through 4.

Equipment and students need to bring 

3-6 pillows per student. 

Linens, including breast drapes (twin-sized fitted and flat sheets, bath size towel or king-size pillowcase ideal) 

Unscented massage oil or lotion.

Textbook for reference 

 

Case study and online quiz - present 1 case of a minimum of 2 pregnancy massages after the 12 weeks and do an online test to gain your certificate.
